What Is Claude Cowork? What It Does and What Changed
Key takeaways
- Claude Cowork handles multi-step tasks — it produces finished files and actions, not just text
- As of October 2026, Cowork is built into Claude itself and runs in the cloud on Anthropic's servers
- Available on Pro ($20/mo) and above — not on the free plan
- Sessions can't be shared, but artifacts can — download and host on ShareDuo for a public link with expiry and password
Claude Cowork is Claude's mode for multi-step tasks. Anthropic's help center defines it as using "the same agentic architecture that powers Claude Code, with no terminal required. Instead of responding to prompts one at a time, Claude can take on complex, multi-step tasks and execute them on your behalf." As of October 2026, Cowork is no longer a separate product — it's built into Claude itself. For how it compares to Chat and Claude Code side by side, see Claude Chat vs Cowork vs Claude Code.

What changed in October 2026
When Cowork launched in April 2026, it was a separate mode you chose explicitly — select "Cowork" in the message box, connect a folder, describe a task. It ran locally on your machine. That model is changing.
Anthropic's pricing page now reads: "Claude Cowork is now just Claude. Rolling out to Pro and Max, with more plans to follow." The practical change: on Pro and Max plans, the separate "Chat" and "Cowork" buttons are disappearing. You describe what you want; Claude decides whether your request calls for a quick reply or a multi-step task.
Three things also changed under the hood:
- Sessions run in the cloud. Cowork used to run locally on your computer. It now runs remotely on Anthropic's servers in an isolated environment. "Work continues if you close your laptop, and you can open the same session from any surface," per the help center.
- The Desktop app becomes a bridge, not a requirement. You can start a Cowork session on the web or on mobile. The Desktop app is still needed if you want Claude to access local files or a local browser — but for cloud-connected tasks (Gmail, Slack, Google Drive), the app is optional.
- Team and Enterprise plans follow later. As of October 6, 2026, the unified experience is rolling out to Pro and Max first. Team and Enterprise users still see the explicit Chat/Cowork options for now.
What does Claude Cowork actually do?
Claude Academy's official definition: "Cowork is Claude working on tasks alongside you. You point it at a folder or a project, connect the apps where your work lives (Gmail, Slack, Google Drive, your calendar), and describe what you want done."
The cleanest way to think about the difference: Chat output is text you'll read or copy. Cowork output is a finished file or an action taken.
In practice, Cowork can:
- Process documents. Read a folder of PDFs, summarize each one, and compile the summaries into a formatted report.
- Work across connected apps. Pull this week's calendar, flag conflicts, draft a reschedule email, and file it in the right folder.
- Build structured files. Produce an Excel spreadsheet with formulas, a PowerPoint presentation, or a formatted Word doc — not a code block you paste somewhere.
- Run scheduled tasks. With scheduled tasks, Claude can complete recurring work automatically — a daily briefing, a weekly digest, a nightly file sort.
- Use a built-in browser. Browse the web, read pages, pull data, and use it in the task output.
What it can't do: anything you haven't authorized. Claude doesn't access apps you haven't connected, files you haven't shared, or screens you haven't granted permission for.

The entry point for Cowork is Claude Pro at $20 per month (or $17 per month billed annually). For pricing detail and the full plan comparison, see is Claude Cowork free?
Is Claude Cowork safe, and can it see your screen?
Cowork sessions run in an isolated environment on Anthropic's servers. Claude can only reach the connectors and folders you explicitly authorize — if you haven't connected Gmail, Claude can't touch your email. It has no screen access, no camera access, and no access to anything on your machine beyond the Desktop app's bridge connections.
Anthropic's help center includes a note worth reading: Cowork has "unique risks due to its agentic nature and internet access." That's a practical caution: because Cowork can take actions (send a file, move a document, call an API), you should review what it's about to do before it runs on anything sensitive. The help center recommends not running Cowork on tasks where an incorrect action would be hard to reverse.
That said, the risk profile is similar to giving a careful assistant access to your Gmail: what they can do is scoped to exactly what you authorized, but they can still make mistakes. The safeguard is that Cowork shows you a plan before it starts longer tasks, and you can interrupt at any point.

What Cowork produces and how to share it
Cowork produces files — documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and HTML artifacts. Anthropic's help center is direct on one point: "Sessions can't be shared with others, but you can share individual artifacts you create during a session." A Cowork session itself is private. What you share is the output.
For finished files (Word docs, Excel sheets, PDFs): download them and send them the way you'd send any file.
For HTML artifacts — dashboards, interactive reports, data visualizations, prototype apps — the cleanest sharing path is to download the HTML and upload it to ShareDuo. You get a public link that anyone can open without a Claude account. You can also set an expiry window, add a password so only the right people can view it, and see how many times it's been opened. You don't need a paid Claude plan to share what Cowork made — ShareDuo works on the file, not the session.
If you're on a Cowork session and want to publish directly without downloading first, the ShareDuo MCP server lets Claude push artifacts to ShareDuo from inside the conversation. You get a stable public URL back in the chat.
For the full download and export walkthrough, see how to download and export a Claude artifact. For access controls (expiry, password, invite-only), see how to password-protect a Claude artifact. For what Cowork artifacts look like and what you can build, see the complete guide to Claude artifacts.
Frequently asked questions
What does Claude Cowork actually do?
Cowork handles multi-step tasks on your behalf — drafting documents, organizing files, synthesizing research — by working across the apps and folders you connect. Instead of generating a text response, it produces a finished file or takes an action.
What is the difference between regular Claude and Claude Cowork?
Chat gives you text you read or copy. Cowork works across your files and apps to produce a finished file or action. As of October 2026, Anthropic is merging the two on Pro and Max plans — you no longer choose; Claude decides which mode your task needs.
Is Claude Cowork free?
No — Cowork requires a paid plan. The entry point is Pro at $20/month (or $17 if billed annually), verified on anthropic.com on October 6, 2026. For all plan options and prices, see is Claude Cowork free?
Is Claude Cowork safe?
Cowork sessions run in an isolated environment on Anthropic's servers. Claude can only access what you explicitly authorize. Anthropic notes it has "unique risks due to its agentic nature and internet access" — review what it plans to do before it acts on anything sensitive.
Can Claude Cowork see your screen?
No. Cowork has no screen access. It works through connectors you authorize (Gmail, Slack, Google Drive) and local folders you grant via the Desktop app. If you haven't connected it, Claude can't see it.
Do I really need Claude Cowork?
If your task ends with text you'll read or copy, Chat is enough. If it ends with a finished file, organized folder, or action in an app, Cowork earns its keep. Most Claude users are fine with Chat for most things.
Is Claude Cowork only available on Mac?
No. Cowork is available on macOS and Windows (Desktop app), web, iOS, and Android. The Mac-only information is out of date — it was accurate at launch in April 2026 but no longer is.
Can Claude Cowork work while my computer is off?
Yes. Sessions now run in Anthropic's cloud, so work continues after you close your laptop. The Desktop app is only needed as a bridge if you're accessing local files or a local browser.
