Are Claude Artifacts Public? Expiry, Privacy and Access

Update (September 2026): Anthropic changed artifact sharing. This page covers two models: (1) legacy Publish — still available for chat artifacts on Free/Pro/Max, publicly viewable by anyone without a Claude account; (2) new Share — for new artifacts on Pro/Max, requires a Claude account to view. See Anthropic's help article for the full plan-by-plan breakdown.

Unpublished Claude artifacts are private to your chat. Legacy published artifacts are public: anyone with the link can open them in any browser, and they can be indexed by search engines. New artifacts shared via the Share button require a Claude account. For a full overview of what artifacts are and everything you can do with them, see the complete guide to Claude artifacts.

Are unpublished Claude artifacts private?

Yes. An artifact you haven't published exists only inside your Claude conversation. It's visible to you, and to anyone you've added to that project or shared the conversation with — but it's not accessible via any external URL. Nothing you build in Claude is publicly visible until you explicitly publish it.

The same applies to artifacts in team projects: they're visible to members of the project, not to the internet.

Do Claude artifacts expire?

Artifacts inside chats persist as long as the chat exists. If you delete a conversation, the artifact goes with it. If you keep the conversation, the artifact stays.

Legacy published artifact links are permanent — they stay live indefinitely until you manually unpublish them. The new Share button (for new artifacts on Pro/Max) does not have an expiry option either. There is no automatic expiry option in Claude's native sharing, and no way to set one from Claude's interface.

If you need expiry, the only path is to host the HTML outside of claude.ai. ShareDuo lets you set expiry to 1 hour, 1 day, 7 days, 30 days, or never — and you can change it after upload from the manage page.

Can Google index a published Claude artifact?

Yes. Published artifacts on claude.ai/public/... URLs can be discovered and indexed by search engines. Claude does not serve a noindex header on published artifact pages.

In practice, most legacy published artifacts won't appear in search results — they'd need other pages linking to them for Google to find them. But if you share a published link publicly (on Twitter, in a public doc, on a forum), it can be crawled and indexed. For anything you don't want discoverable, don't use Claude's legacy Publish. (New Share artifacts require a Claude account to view and are not indexed.)

ShareDuo serves all hosted artifacts with X-Robots-Tag: noindex by default, so they won't appear in search results. You can opt into indexing per-artifact from the manage page if you want search visibility.

How to make a published artifact private again

Open the artifact in Claude, click the share or publish icon in the artifact panel, and choose Unpublish. The link stops working immediately — anyone who visits it will get an error page.

One caveat: once you unpublish a Claude artifact, you cannot republish the same artifact at the same URL. If you need to share it again, you'd either need to create a new artifact or use a hosting service like ShareDuo where you control the link lifecycle.

How to add an expiry date or password

Claude's native sharing has none of these controls. To add them:

  1. Download the artifact HTML from Claude (click ··· → Download on the artifact panel).
  2. Upload the HTML to ShareDuo.
  3. Set your expiry window and optional password at upload time.
  4. Share the ShareDuo link instead of the Claude link.

Can I see who viewed my artifact?

Not in Claude — neither the legacy Publish button nor the new Share button gives you a view count, open timestamp, or analytics of any kind.

With ShareDuo, the manage page for each artifact shows a view count and the last-opened timestamp. Plus subscribers can connect a Google Analytics tag to track individual artifact page views in GA4. If you need to know whether someone actually opened what you sent, ShareDuo's view counter is the simplest way to check.
